Eligibility
Students are eligible to audition if they are:
Youth Symphony members are not required to re-audition each season. Members will be notified if they need to re-audition to maintain status in the group.
- A current middle or high school student
- A member of their school band and/or orchestra or a comparable program for homeschoolers.
- Prepared to commit to the rehearsal and concert schedule. Rehearsals take place on Monday nights from 4-6:15p. Concerts take place in mid-December and mid-April. (Wind players: Monday evening rehearsals may conflict with marching band schedules. Conflicts are normally resolved between school band directors, MMYS members, and MMYS conductors.)

Auditions are held at East Lansing High School in the Band Room, room 109.
For Strings and Winds
1. Prepared solo or etude:
For Percussion
Proficiency on the following instruments is desirable but not mandatory: timpani, snare drum, multiple percussion, mallets.

- 3 to 5 minutes in length (without piano accompaniment) — work with your private lesson instructor to select an appropriate piece
- No extra copy of the music is needed for the audition judge
- Solo does not have to be memorized
For Percussion
Proficiency on the following instruments is desirable but not mandatory: timpani, snare drum, multiple percussion, mallets.
1. Prepared solo:
- Short solo on timpani, snare drum, multiple percussion, and/or mallet (concert type, not rudimental or drum set) — No extra copy of the music is needed for the audition judge; solo does not have to be memorized
- Long roll on timpani and snare: soft to loud to soft
After Your Audition
- The music directors place students according to the quality of their audition.
- You will receive an email with audition results within one week following your audition.
- IF YOU RECEIVE A EMAIL OF INVITATION to the MMYS, be sure to do the following to complete your membership:
- Reply to the email to confirm your seat
- Sign and return your commitment form
- Pay your $200 tuition fee – by check payable to MMYS (note that tuition assistance is available)
